Once again, our first match of the season in the Northern Counties League was against Northumberland at picturesque Dunstanburgh Castle GC. They day started cool, cloudy and a reasonably strong wind, but we were fortunate not to have any rain, and the sun came out in the afternoon.
We had five first team appearances for the Boys in Theo McCormick, Archie Palmer, Oscar Knowles, Will Bracha and George Walker.
Jonty, Boys Captain led off with Theo as his partner and got off to a poor start for them being a couple down after four holes but bounced back with wins at five and six to level the game. The lead switched between the two teams, but with nothing much in it and finished with a half. Second off were the two England International U16 Boys of Tom and George who took control from the start with some brilliant golf and were 7Up after seven to finish off with a convincing win of 6&4. Ewan and Harry were next out and they played well to a comfortable win 4&3. Will and Oscar played well although faltering over the back nine managed to take it with a 1Up. Our final pair of Archie and George played good golf to win 5&4. Lunch time result was 4.5 – 0.5 a turn around to last year’s score.
The boys after a first-class lunch were fired up and went out and played some tremendous golf winning eight games and halving the other two.
Philip commented after the match: The day was very windy for the boys and both sides coped admirably with it to produce some spectacular golf. I was very impressed with those Boys on their first outing who fitted in well to produce some great golf.
As always with our matches with Northumberland the match was played in the true spirit of the game where new friendships have been established between the boys especially the new ones from both sides and this is what the game is about!
The course was in first class condition, the food tremendous and the hospitality second to none so a big thank you to Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club, staff and members for such a wonderful day.
