St Enodoc Golf Club

The St Enodoc Golf Club, established in 1890, is located on the north Cornwall coast is one of the oldest golf clubs in England. Its championship links, the Church Course, is a breathtaking layout that is set against the backdrop of some of the greatest sea and estuary views of any course in the world. Its spectacular panoramas over the North Atlantic Ocean and the Camel Estuary from every hole offer both drama and a sense of tranquillity.

Designed by the famous architect,  James Braid, the Church Course is regularly recognised as one of the top championship links courses in England and regularly features high in golf rankings compiled by the golfing media whilst a second course, the Holywell, a shorter and less challenging layout compared to the main course, is ideal for juniors, beginners and higher-handicap golfers.

At 6,547 yards the Church Course is not long by today’s standards yet the course record stands at 65, just 4 under par, giving golfers a good indication of how challenging the course is. Considered to be one of Braid’s finest designs, the Course features a splattering of blind shots including one on the first hole, deceptive undulations on the fairways as well as firm and tricky greens.

It is perhaps best known for its distinctive and fearsome Himalaya Bunker on the 6th hole, which is reputedly the highest in Europe. However it is the 10th that is referred to as the Signature Hole as it winds its way towards the 11th century St Enodoc Church, where poet laureate Sir John Betjeman lies buried beside his favourite course.

Testament to its quality, the Church Course has hosted numerous amateur golf events, including the English Ladies Amateur Championship in 1993 and 2002 and the English Counties Championship in 1989 and 2005.

Thanks to the temperate micro-climate in north Cornwall, the green keepers at St Enodoc are able to maintain the links in immaculate condition throughout the year and ensure they remain open all year round.

Off the course, visitors to Rock can enjoy the stunning beaches of Polzeath and Daymer Bay and visit the charming fishing village of Port Isaac, now well known through the country as the location for the popular television series Doc Martin. Just across the Camel Estuary from St Enodoc, Padstow is a magnet for those looking for excellent restaurants such as Rick Stein’s collection of seafood outlets and independent shops offering local arts and crafts.
