Dr Alister MacKenzie
Alister MacKenzie (30 August 1870 – 6 January 1934) was a golf course architect whose course designs span four continents.
Originally trained as a surgeon, MacKenzie served as a civilian physician with the British Army during the Boer War where he first became aware of the principles of camouflage.
During the First World War, MacKenzie made his own significant contributions to military camouflage, which he saw as closely related to golf course design.

Moortown Golf Club
Moortown has always held a richly deserved reputation as one of the country’s finest Championship Golf courses. Originally designed by MacKenzie, Moortown is set in 175 acres of dramatically contrasting mainly level woodland and moorland.
Alwoodley
The very first course designed by MacKenzie was Alwoodley in 1907, followed by Moortown in 1909. Both courses are found in North Leeds, with their respective clubhouses just half a mile apart.
South Moor Golf Club
South Moor
South Moor can claim to be one of only 40 heathland courses in the UK. It is partially routed through gorse, heather and birch and there are only a few such examples in the North of England. Heathland courses are more frequently found in the Home Counties, where green fees can cost well over £150. South Moor charges visitors a fraction of that.

In September 2011 Weston-super-Mare Golf Club sucessfully hosted the MacKenzie Medallion Competition, welcoming members from other ‘MacKenzie’ clubs in the spirit and traditions preached by our illustrious course designer. Weston super Mare Golf Club was delighted to win the MacKenzie Medallion for the first time.
